The British Ambassador to Italy Jill Morris was on an official visit to the Universiade Napoli 2019 headquarters this morning, at Mostra d’Oltremare. She was accompanied by her diplomatic staff and Stew Fowley, Head of the UK Delegation to University Games. They were all welcomed by Gianluca Basile (Napoli 2019 Extraordinary Commissioner), Adam Sotiriadis (FISU General Coordinator), Manuela Di Centa (Institutional Sports Relations Coordinator), Francis Cirianni (Head of Delegation Services) and Alessandra Clemente (Municipal Councillor for Youth Policies).
During his opening speech, Commissioner Basile recalled all the steps that led Naples and Campania to host the 30th Summer Universiade, highlighting the great job done by Regione Campania, which strongly supported the event. It financed the renovation of over 60 sports venues, which are going to host competitions and training sessions, representing an important legacy for young people from all over the regional territory. Manuela Di Centa instead brought greetings from President of Regione Campania Vincenzo De Luca, stating that sport combined with training is the most important message to convey to the younger generations.
Ambassador Morris defined today’s visit “A beautiful visit”, congratulating the Extraordinary Commissioner, Regione Campania and Comune di Napoli. “I saw the incredible work, passion and energy behind the stage, and how many young people are involved in this project. Moreover – she continued – thanks to the renovation of many sports venues, this event is also a great investment for next generations. I have no doubt – she added – about the warm welcome Naples will be able to give to the thousands of athletes coming here for the Universiade. I am sure it will be perfect”. Finally, the Ambassador in wishing good luck to the British team, to Italians, and to all the participants in the 30th Summer Universiade, concluded: “I can’t wait to return to Naples for the opening ceremony on July 3rd”.
