The 30th Summer Universiade Napoli 2019 will provide a free and detailed medical assistance plan, on both competition and training venues, as well as on the Athletes’ Villages. “A real general hospital – explained Bianca Liccardo, Head of Medical Services of Napoli 2019 – has been set up within the Athletes’ Village located at Naples’ Stazione Marittima (Maritime Station), with an emergency first response centre, plus a series of specialised clinics. In case of emergency, patient transfer to the hospital in charge will be arranged thanks to the collaboration with the local 118 service. It will be the same for the other Villages: in Caserta, an agreement for specialised examinations has been signed with Sant’Anna and San Sebastiano hospitals. In Salerno, with Ruggi d’Aragona hospital. Both training and competition venues are provided with ambulances. In addition, in competition venues, medical assistance has been strengthened due to the presence of the audience”.
The health plan was organised by Professor Amato de Paulis, Medical Area General Coordinator of Napoli 2019, and approved by the General Managers of local hospitals and health authorities, including Antonio Postiglione, Campania General Public Health Director. Gaetano Manfredi, Rector of Federico II University, and the Rectors of other Neapolitan Universities, together with Regione Campania, strongly supported a widespread health plan capable of meeting the demands of a sports event such as the Universiade.
“National Confederation of Misericordie d’Italia – said de Paulis – plays a key role in this plan, as it will provide healthcare resources in support of the Organizing Committee. More than 50 ambulances are already fully operative in the training venues, whereas 70 doctors are being deployed in Naples’ Stazione Marittima and in the Athletes’ Villages of Caserta and Salerno. The specialised personnel working in Naples’ Village is coordinated by Vincenzo Viggiani, General Manager of Federico II University Hospital, who has granted access to the pharmacy of the Polyclinic, allowing widespread distribution of medicines in all Villages, as well as to the clinical laboratory analysis, radiology and specialised services. With the start of the competitions – he added – additional human resources will be deployed”.
The developed health plan also concerns food safety. “Regione Campania – said Vincenzo Caputo, Medical Area Coordinator – took care of the participants’ living environment and food safety, establishing several preventive food controls, to be performed before and after the event, through a regional mass catering centre in order to ensure the highest level of safety”.
