Naples Universiade 2019 Commissioner Gianluca Basile spoke this week about the progress made in work on the San Paolo stadium, which will host the opening ceremony of the Games in July.
“The lighting system has been completely renovated and this is an important step. We are working on the bathrooms, on the audio-video system and soon we will also be working on the seats,” Basile said. The San Paolo stadium, he said after an on-site inspection with Napoli football Club Chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis and Campania Governor Vincenzo De Luca, “will be the main facility and has the most funds for renovations”. There is a commitment not to hinder the calendar of games for the Napoli soccer team.
“We are working in agreement with the Naples town council, which did the planning,” he said on leaving the stadium, “and with the Napoli football team to organize the timeline so as to limit interference with the Napoli playing season.” He added “we are doing some testing but the bulk of the works will begin in January, taking advantage of the winter break for the championships and that of the Champions League, and then they will resume in a significant manner starting on May 20.”
