After the approval given to the works planned for the Afragola ‘Moccia’ site, where rugby events will be held, the contract awarding phase for the Naples Universiade 2019 sports facilities has been completed. Some 55 contracts have been awarded by Special Commissioner Gianluca Basile and his team for renovations on facilities that will be hosting the 18 sports in Naples July 3-14. Most of the works assigned have begun, with the latest being the Palaveliero in San Giorgio a Cremano, the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) field (which will serve as a training ground for archers) and the PaladelMauro in Avellino, where the main basketball competition will be held. Yet to begin are works planned at the San Paolo stadium (in addition to those already completed for the renovation of the athletics track, for the new LED lighting and for a first section of the bathrooms) and which will later include a second section of new bathrooms and a surveillance system.
There will also be a separate section for the Collana stadium after the 2.8 million euros needed are found. Works are expected to begin in the coming days for the renovating of three Palavesuvio gyms. “A phase requiring a great deal of effort has ended,” said special commissioner Gianluca Basile, “the one for the awarding of contracts for sports facilities, which saw us work in synergy with (Italian anti-corruption authority) ANAC to ensure complete transparency in the renovation of key sports facilities in the Campania region. It has been a race against time (Basile was appointed in August, Ed.) but today, fewer than 200 days before the event, we can say that we have made up for a great deal of lost ground.” The commissioner went on to say that “the facilities will be the significant legacy that the Universiade will leave in Naples and all of the Campania region. These are facilities that after the Universiade will be at available to citizens and all the regional sports teams. Now we will go forward with determination with the awarding of contracts for services and with the completion of the San Paolo stadium before entering the sports phase at full steam for a Universiade at the level it should be, including from the technical standpoint.” Basile then thanked the mayor of Cercola Fiengo “for the sensitivity shown in finding an alternative solution for the Dike Napoli women athletes, a basketball team that competes in Serie A1.”
