At the Archbishop’s Palace of Naples, the Napoli 2019 Extraordinary Commissioner Gianluca Basile and Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe signed a memorandum of understanding to define a series of interreligious and social initiatives in view of the 30th Summer Universiade taking place in Naples from 3rd to 14th July. Among the many initiatives expected there will also be a big interreligious event called “Religions and Cultures for Peace”, scheduled for the evening of July 6 in Piazza del Plebiscito. Guests taking part in the 30th Summer Universiade will also be offered tourist itineraries to discover the secrets of Parthenope. In order to promote the event and leave a tangible trace, the Regione Campania – together with the Commission – will support the renovation and redevelopment of the “Tecnostruttura via Dietro La Vigna”, in the Piscinola district, in response to the Neapolitan Archdiocese and in conjunction with the Municipality of Naples.
Within the Athletes Village, some areas will be dedicated to the worship of the Catholic faith and other religions. Such signed agreement also establishes that during the event, excess food and drinks will be given, with the help of Caritas, to needy institutions identified by the Archdiocese. “Thanks to the Universiade – highlighted Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe – Naples and Campania are becoming the European capital of world hospitality. It is a special and extraordinary event and will be the demonstration of how young people can mature together, through sport, knowledge and fraternity”. The Cardinal then made a special promise: “Starting today I will make sure that the Universiade torch stops off in Vatican City to be blessed by the Pope”. Visibly excited, Commissioner Gianluca Basile expressed his deep satisfaction with the signature of the agreement. “It is a collaboration that we strongly wanted because it promotes the acceptance of peoples, some even at war with each other, with the possibility of creating moments of social interaction and interreligious prayer during the event in July”. Talking about the intervention in Piscinola’s structure, Basile added: “With this initiative we want to send an important signal in a disadvantaged district, redeveloping a suburban area that can be used by many young people”.
