On Tuesday, June 4th, the 30th Summer Universiade Napoli 2019 Torch Relay will start from Turin, where the first Universiade took place exactly 60 years ago in 1959. On Thursday, June 6th, it will be the turn of the FISU headquarters in Lausanne. Once left Switzerland, the Torch will return to Italy to reach the provinces of Campania, before arriving in Naples on the afternoon of July 2nd.
The stop in Turin is the longest on the route: 16 torchbearers will run 4 kilometers, starting at 3 pm from Via Verdi, Home University Rectorate, and arriving at Valentino Castle, headquarters of the Polytechnic, passing through Museo Egizio. The first torchbearer is Davide Tizzano, Olympic rowing champion and Sport Operation Manager of Napoli 2019. Together with the champions Jessica Rossi, Marco Morello, Chiara Rebagliati and Walter Bottega, the young athletes of the sports club “Champion Center la Scampia che vince” will take part in the Turin relay too: Massimo Portogallo, Biagio Nettore, Emilia Scarano, Christian Franzese and Andrea Siesto.
The torch lighting ceremony will be opened by the institutional greetings of Fulvio Bonavitacola (Vice President of Regione Campania), Gianluca Basile (Extraordinary Commissioner of Napoli 2019), Oleg Matytsin (FISU President), Gianmaria Ajani (Rector of the University of Turin), Guido Saracco (Rector of Polytechnic University of Turin), Chiara Appendino (Mayor of Turin), Lorenzo Lentini (CUSI President) and Riccardo D’Elicio (President of CUS Torino).
The ceremony will end with a live show symbolizing the heart of Campania and Piemonte, with an imaginary meeting between Mole Antonelliana and Mermaid Parthenope, official mascot of the Universiade Napoli 2019.
