Not only sports: the 30th Summer Universiade Organising Committee offers athletes and delegates a vast cultural programme aimed at discovering the beauties of Naples and Campania. During the whole Universiade, special events will take place in some of the most suggestive locations of the Region, including music performances and exhibitions, archaeological finds, theatre and workshops. Athletes will be able to access several exhibitions, either for free or with a special discount: MANN “Paideia”, “L’arte sa nuotare” (“Art can swim”) and “Gli Assiri all’ombra del Vesuvio” (“The Assyrians in the shadow of the Vesuvius”); “Chagall sogno d’amore” (“Chagall love dream”) at the Basilica of Pietrasanta, displaying 150 art works from the artist; “Be Yourself, everyone else is ready” at PAN, the first art exposition of English artist Daniel Lismore; “Sacra Neapolis” (“Sacred Neapolis”) at Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore alla Pietrasanta, dedicated to the myths, legends and history of Naples. Delegates will be able to admire Cappella Sansevero and the Cristo Velato, the symbol of Naples in the world, with a reduced price ticket. At the Museo Diocesano, delegates will be able to visit the Church of Donnaregina Vecchia, dating back to 1300, as well as the Church of Donnaregina Nuova (1600), but especially they will have the possibility to view 23 paintings by Caravaggio with the “Tableaux Vivant”. Visits, workshops and special routes for disabled people through the archaeological temples of Paestum in Salerno will be organized. The Archdiocese of Naples will offer athletes guided tours in order to discover the historical centre of the city, while the Association of Italian Historical Residences will organise a tour among the historical residences of Campania. San Carlo Theatre, the most ancient in Europe, will host delegates for two special events: the religious “Sports and Religion for Peace”, on July 8th, and “Cavalleria Rusticana”, the one-act play by Pietro Mascagni, with the direction of Pippo Delbono, on July 9th. The Domus Ars will present “Cantanapoli”, a tribute to the musical tradition which has made Naples famous all
over the world. Napoli Teatro Festival will host fifteen “Universiade-themed” shows, such as “L’isola di legno” (“The wooden island”) by Piazza Vittoria Orchestra at the Abbey of Mercogliano, in Avellino. Among its initiatives during the Universiade, Benevento will offer the show by Benevento Conservatory’s Symphonic Orchestra in the Roman Theatre and seminars on the history and the excellences of the territory, in collaboration with “Sannio Falanghina Città del Vino” (“Sannio Falanghina City of Wine”). Furthermore, in Caserta and Salerno, “Casa Campania” will provide different services, from cooking shows to immersive virtual reality.
