Benevento wears the colours of the Universiade. The city is ready to host the event, scheduled from July 3rd to 14th, with a full program of cultural and sporting initiatives presented this morning in the “Sala Rossa” of Palazzo San Domenico, the headquarters of University of Sannio. “Benevento is getting ready for this event in the best possible way – said Gianluca Basile, Universiade Extraordinary Commissioner – we visited Vigorito Stadium, which has been renovated thanks to the funds allocated by Regione Campania. PalaTedeschi, which has been refurbished as well, is in excellent conditions and ready to host the national volleyball teams. The venues will be available to Campania citizens even after the event, and this is another source of pride for us. The program presented today also included other events related to University Games and the Torch Relay route, which will take place on June 24th “.
On July 4th, the Roman Theatre will host the performance by the Symphonic Orchestra of the Benevento Conservatory with music by Mogol and Lucio Battisti, while two lectures on the history of the city and the excellence of the territory will take place on July 10th, in cooperation with Sannio Falanghina Città del Vino.
“I have been following the Universiade project since 2014 – recalled Filippo de Rossi, rector of University of Sannio – but the new Organizing Committee, in one year, made possible what seemed to be impossible”, while mayor’s representative Vincenzo Lauro added that “the route planned for the Torch Relay will not interfere with city traffic and will emphasize the beauty of our territory”. The Torch will start its route from the Roman Theatre, passing through all the main monuments of Benevento, from the Obelisk of the temple of Isis to the Rectors’ Fortress, from the Church of Santa Sofia to the Trajan Arch. Ten torch-bearers will take turns carrying the flame along a 3 km path. “European fencing champion Francesca Boscarelli and other worthy representatives of this city will take part in the Relay as torch-bearers”, explained Mario Collarile, president of Coni Benevento
