From sports venues to Athletes’ Villages, from accreditations to competitions results. Together with the human factor, technology plays a key role in the organization and management of the Summer Universiade Napoli 2019. Vodafone and Fastweb operators have established an IP network with MPLS technology covering all the competition venues. Every venue will be able to access this network with different features, depending on whether they host finals or not. The guests of the Athletes’ Villages in Naples and Salerno will also have privileged access to the network. A optical fibre network infrastructure has also been set up for the Organizing Committee headquarters at Mostra d’Oltremare: each functional area has been wired with a double 10gb link to guarantee the best efficiency. This has been a necessary upgrade, as Mostra d’Oltremare will host the International Broadcasting Centre. Technology also plays a vital role for any aspect referring to venue access by accredited individuals. Each one of them will be provided with a badge, a card coded by FISU with appropriate initials which has been upgraded by the Organizing Committee with a two-dimensional encrypted code: a digital stamp, designed by a Neapolitan company, which will guarantee additional protection against forgery. “For anything related to Napoli 2019 computer security – says Salvatore Ferrandino, Director of Technology – it is important to underline the collaboration with the Postal Police, which will assign two units of its personnel to the ‘Technology Operation Centre’ set up within the Organizing Committee headquarters, and will be in constant contact with the Central Control Office ”. The “Games Management System” is the computer system providing a map of all delegates and services offered to them: from accommodation to transport and benefits. Technology will be extremely important to determine competition results as well. San Paolo Stadium, which will host athletics competitions, will be a powerhouse of technology, required to record sprinters’ times, photo finish, split-times, checks on jumps and throws.
