The planning commission for the 2019 Universiade World University Games has reached an agreement with sports federations, and work on the operative phase of sporting events is set to begin in November.
The news came following a meeting on Wednesday at the Palazzo delle Federazioni building in Rome, which was attended by all of the sporting federations involved in the Universiade, with the exception of Federcalcio; as well as CUSI; the Universiade commissioner; CONI; and attorney Almerina Bove, who represents the Region of Campania.
Alberto Miglietta, CEO of CONI Services, said he was very pleased at the result of the meeting.
“There was an absolutely positive atmosphere that sport is always able to give in difficult moments, because it is able to unite and work together to achieve goals: ours is the Universiade in 2019,” Miglietta said.
“All of the federations made themselves available; we are absolutely satisfied,” he said.
“Even the commissioner seemed to be pleased with this meeting. CONI and CONI Services’ role is that of facilitating dialogue between the organising committee and the federations.
We are satisfied; finally there was a positive meeting where sport was discussed,” he said.
He was clear about the fact that there is “no time to waste” and said now that the directors’ committee is in local hands “it’s much more practical” and problem resolution is easier. He said the Wednesday meeting marked “a shared path that can bring an excellent result”.
“We’ll keep our fingers crossed until the opening ceremony,” he said.
The next step is to formalise the agreement between the federations and the organising committee, in order to form a coordinated working group.
“At the start of November the competition managers will begin work with the federations, who will concretely and formally get in the game so that by next July everything is ready. We have to be positive,” Miglietta said.
