Museo Cappella Sansevero welcomes the athletes of the Universiade Napoli 2019. The management of the museum has decided to apply, from July 1st to 15th, a reduced-price ticket (3 euros) for all the athletes taking part in the multi-sport event that will involve the whole region in just over ten days.
Considered a jewel of Neapolitan Baroque and ranked as the most visited cultural site in the city, the museum intertwines beauty and mystery, creating a unique, timeless atmosphere. The Sansevero Chapel preserves the famous Veiled Christ, one of the most evocative sculptures in the world, chosen for the promotional videos of the Universiade as a symbol of Naples.
Created in 1753 by Italian sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino and commissioned by the Prince of Sansevero Raimondo di Sangro, the sculpture, obtained from a single block of marble, fascinates visitors due to the transparency of the veil covering the body of Christ. Legend has it that the transparency effect was the result of an alchemical process of “marbling” executed by Prince of Sansevero himself.
Athletes will obtain the discount by showing their accreditation card at the ticket office. The Museum is open every day – except Tuesdays – from 9am to 7pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 8:30pm (last admission 30 min before closing time).
