The opening press conference of the 30th Summer Universiade Napoli 2019, promoted by the International University Sports Federation, was held this morning in Naples at the Main Press Centre in Mostra d’Oltremare. “Through the Universiade – said Oleg Matytsin, President of FISU – we mean to send a message not only to sports associations, but also to academic associations and political leaders, to say that sport, university sport and the world of education should constitute the main part of a State’s policies”. “Through sport – he added – we bring a message of peace to the world, we give an example of cohesion, of competition spirit and pride in one’s Country. I believe the future of our Countries lies in the hearts of our students. Sport is a unique opportunity to create a spirit of cohesion within society. The athletes participating in the event represent universities, which play an increasingly important role in nowadays society”. Vincenzo De Luca, President of Campania Region, said that the Universiade “looks at sports results, but also at the values of peace and dialogue among young people from different Countries, who – he added – will soon become the ruling class in their respective Countries. The Universiade represents an opportunity for Naples and Campania to have worldwide visibility”. Napoli 2019 Extraordinary Commissioner Gianluca Basile further emphasized that “since sports venues are ready and competitions are starting tomorrow, we can finally enjoy the event”.
